Writing Process Notes

Pre-Write
Brainstorming:
use cluster OR list form (5-10min)
write whatever comes to your mind about the topic
doesn’t have to be neat, doesn’t have to make total sense, just
DON’T STOP WRITING till the timer goes off

Outline:
The outline is used to identify the main idea of your topic and supporting details, and
where you plan to put them in your paper (organization)  It is how you frame/structure
your paper.
Start with BROWN’S format but not the ONLY way to outline your paper.

Drafting
Composition - putting your outline into paragraph form using complete sentences.
Multiple drafts - you are never “done” writing - there is always room to improve your
writing.

Revising
Looks at the composition of your paper.  
Clear beginning, middle, and end of your paper.
Clear order of ideas.
Strong opening (grabs readers attention) and closing that summarizes point.
Good details, specific information
Utilizes different types of sentences.

Editing
Looks at the mechanics of your paper.
spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization
